Engineering Success: Victoria reaches her career goals

em6433

This week we congratulate Victoria, one of our work experience volunteers, whose journey brought her across the world to study in New Zealand. After an initial degree in Mechanical Engineering from Israel, Victoria came to Wellington to complete a Masters in Information Technology through Weltec. Her hard work and dedication paid off as she recently accepted a role as a Product Design Engineer working with 3D software!

At Yes for Success Victoria volunteered her time and skills while gaining local experience and making the most of what our programmes have to offer. We’re thrilled to celebrate her finding her feet in Aotearoa and achieving professional success.

How did you hear about YFS?

I was looking to volunteer in an administrative role and saw an advertisement for an available role with YFS on the Volunteer Wellington website.

Why did you come to us for assistance?

I wanted to get some work experience, improve my English and meet new people.

How did we help you?

YFS gave me the tools needed to succeed in the labour market. I attended interview workshops, career advice sessions with recruitment agencies, and had an interview styling. In addition, volunteering at YFS provided me with valuable work experience in retail, admin support and marketing. Finally, it boosted my self-confidence and improved my communication in English.

How did our volunteers make you feel?

The volunteers made me feel very welcome and comfortable, and I enjoyed working alongside people from different cultures and backgrounds. They assisted me and taught me a lot.

Did our programmes meet your expectations?

Yes and even more. I loved the outfit I received from YFS and wore it to my interview!

What was the result?

Eventually, I got hired for the engineer role that I had been seeking for such a long time.

How would you define success?

Success for me is when you set a goal and eventually reach it. Overcoming obstacles and challenges on the way to a goal is also success for me.

What advice would you give others?

Don’t give up on your job search. It's a difficult and tedious process, but you have to keep trying and be open to different opportunities to reach your goal. In the end, all the efforts pay off.

What next – have you set any goals?

To succeed in my new role. I’m looking forward to learning new skills and technologies, and engaging with more hands-on work in my field.
