From new beginnings to new successes – Dita’s journey at Yes For Success

Updated: Sep 19

Dita is new to New Zealand and like many newcomers, she wanted to establish herself in a new country with local work experience and connections. Searching for a way to break into the job market, Dita came to Yes for Success (YFS), where she would enhance her CV,  build her confidence, and find community. She now has a bag full of valuable skills and experiences and is entering the workforce as a sales assistant at a jewellery store.

How did you hear about YFS?

I found YFS through the Volunteer Wellington website. I applied for a work experience volunteer position through that website, and about a week later, I received an invitation email from YFS.

Why did you come to us for assistance?

I moved to New Zealand four months ago with my husband and son. Since then, I had been struggling to find a job due to my lack of work experience and local connections. When I discovered the Work Experience programme at YFS, I was thrilled. I believe it was the perfect stepping stone to gain the experience and connections I needed.

What did you hope to achieve?

I wanted to gain practical skills that would make me more desirable in the competitive job market. Building my resume was a key goal. I wanted to show that I have relevant experience and achievements to attract potential employers. I was also excited to meet new people and expand my professional network, which would help me learn more about the industry and find more opportunities.

How did we help you?

This organisation has played a crucial role in moving my career forward. It gave me real-world experience, helped me meet important people in my field, and made my resume stronger. All these things improved my job prospects and prepared me for future career opportunities.

How did our volunteers make you feel?

The volunteers made a significant impact on my experience. Their support has truly been a blessing. From the moment I joined the programme, their friendliness and willingness created a welcoming atmosphere that made me feel comfortable and valued. I had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people, which helped me build new friendships and integrate more smoothly into the community. After moving here, I was still adjusting to a new environment, and the volunteers played a key role in making me feel at home. Their guidance, encouragement, and warmth helped ease my transition and made me feel like I belonged. Their efforts have enriched my experience and provided me with a sense of connection and belonging in this new place.

Did our programme(s) meet your expectations?

Yes, work experience with YFS met my expectations and more. It provided me with practical experience, helping me develop valuable skills that are directly applicable to my career. The programme also exceeded my expectations by introducing me to a supportive community.

What was the outcome? Did you achieve your goal?

Thanks to the skills and knowledge I gained, I got a job as a sales assistant at a jewellery store.

What did this mean to you? What changed for you as a result?

Firstly, I saw a boost in my confidence. The hands-on experience and skills I gained have made me feel more sure of myself, which helped both my personal and professional growth. The programme also made me feel more settled and part of my new community. By introducing me to local people and resources, I was able to build a support network and started to feel at home here. This sense of belonging has made me more comfortable and made it easier to adjust to my new surroundings.

What next? Have you set any other goals?

Right now, I’m focusing on taking things one step at a time. My main goal is to do well in my new job as a sales assistant. I want to learn my role thoroughly, do my job well, and keep improving my skills. This will help me build a strong base and gain more experience. Once I feel settled and confident in my current job, I’ll start thinking about what comes next. This could be moving up in my career, exploring new opportunities, or setting long-term goals. But for now, my priority is to work hard and make a positive impact in my new role.

What does success mean to you?

To me, success is not just about achieving specific goals or reaching certain milestones, it’s about the journey and personal growth along the way. I want to embrace challenges and keep learning from experiences, whether they are successes or setbacks. Success means making the most of my abilities and resources and striving to be the best version of myself.

Are you thinking of getting involved in our other programmes?

I would love some constructive feedback to help me improve and contribute to maintaining a positive and supportive work environment. I may not be able to join other programmes due to my nearly daily work schedule. However, I am committed to continuing my volunteer work and will certainly try to volunteer once a week.

What advice would you give to other people looking to make a change?

Set clear and realistic goals for yourself and take your time to achieve them. Be open to learning new things and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Keep working steadily towards your goals, even if progress seems slow at times. Staying persistent and patient will help you reach your objectives and grow along the way.

Dita’s spirit of continuous learning and her persistence give hope to those starting anew. Her involvement with our Work Experience Programme helped her find support and develop the skills necessary to thrive in new environments. If you’re ready to make a positive change in your own life, consider joining our programmes at Yes for Success. Whether you're seeking work experience, mentorship, or simply a supportive community, YFS is here to help you achieve your goals. Take the first step today.
