Helping Upane Students Dress for Success

On 8th October we worked with Upane to help their He Ara Anamata students unlock their potential. The six-week programme pepares rangatahi and whanau for the workforce and connects them with industry professionals.

YFS Programmes Manager, Lisa Theron led the session with experienced stylist, Irene Corpuz. The session included a presentation followed by a Q&A, before our team provided personalised styling. Twelve students signed up for the morning event with three rebooking for more comprehensive styling at our hub. Our stylists and assistants worked to ensure each participant left with a look that boosted their confidence. Feedback was positive, with several students expressing interest in our additional services such as career coaching and mentorship.

Lisa said, "Having the right clothes to wear is a vital part of the journey into paid employment and our team of volunteer stylists were delighted to style the students with suitable workwear."

Porirua is a region known for its cultural diversity and younger population. It has a significant proportion of Māori and Pasifika communities and around 27% of the population is under 15 years old. The area faces higher-than-average unemployment rates, with many families living in lower socio-economic conditions. Bringing our services to Porirua reflects Yes for Success's commitment to supporting individuals in areas where access to career development opportunities can make a tangible difference, not just for the individual but their whanau and wider community.

Feedback from the students:

I am grateful for the service and lovely people.

Thank you, Donna, for being my stylist.

I felt comfortable and she knew how to help style me and what I liked.
