Suzanne had suffered some major setbacks with her health. She was looking to get back on course while also learning to have some fun again, so she came to find out what Yes for Success mentoring could do for her.
Can you tell us a bit about why you came to us for assistance?
Two concussions had altered my life dramatically, so being mentored was part of regaining control over my life so that I could make my own decisions.
What did you hope to achieve?
I wanted to start again, so I needed a foundation from which to launch. I wanted to break free from how things were, and this seemed like a good way.
How did we help you?
With my mentor, we put together a plan that I was happy with. Nothing was too silly and I felt comfortable talking about my experiences and feelings. Jan encouraged me to do new things, like modelling in the Dress for Success fashion parade last year at the British High Commission.
How did our volunteers make you feel?
I was told that I did not have to stick with my assigned mentor if the relationship didn’t feel right, but Jan is vibrant, supportive, and patient, and she has helped me a lot.
Did our programme meet your expectations?
It exceeded my expectations.
What was the result?
I have achieved a lot, and I’ve still got things that I’m working on. I’m not stopping yet!
What did this mean to you?
I am very thankful for the mentoring. I have new opportunities to pursue now and new avenues to go down. I also have strategies for exploring new things.
How would you define success?
Success is different for everyone. I don’t define success by the usual material measures. Instead, I take a humble approach to its definition. I appreciate small pleasures and achievements.
Are you thinking of using any of our other programmes, such as mentoring, attending our success workshops, or volunteering?
I help at the Hutt hub with clothing management and work in the Dressed boutique there. This is very constructive because it gives me new skills and purpose.
What advice would you give to other people looking to make a change?
You are the most powerful person in your life. Take the leap!
