Up and coming novelist starts a new chapter

Nico volunteers at our Dressed in the Hutt boutique. They were so excited when they popped in to tell us their good news this week. We couldn't resist grabbing the camera for a quick pic and sharing their story with you.

How did you hear about us?

Word of mouth mostly, one of my coworkers told me that she was doing retail shifts here

and I attended two separate talks about the 'supporting people with getting a job' side of the Yes for Success operations.

Can you tell us a bit about why you came to us for assistance?

I heard a lot of good things about the environment and people at Yes for Success and hoped to find a supportive place where I could work on my retail skill, gain experience and look for a job.

What did you hope to achieve?

I hoped to be able to find a job and support my family with our financial struggles.

How did we help you?

I was able to not only build a good resume through the career coaching programme, but also figure out what direction I wanted to go in with my schooling. Volunteering in the boutique was helpful as it gave me the retail experience employers were after.

How did our volunteers make you feel?

The volunteers that I’ve interacted with have all been fantastic. It feels like I’m really part of the Yes for Success family.

Did our programmes meet your expectations?

Absolutely :]

Did you achieve your goal?

Yes! I now have a job with Resene, I’m starting a degree in Data Science and Computer graphics and videogames, and my book has officially been published.

What changed for you as a result?

I’ve felt stuck in a rut that I couldn’t get out of, but achieving my goal and then some has lifted a lot of stress off my shoulders. Not only that, I’m able to continue doing work that I love.

What next?

Next is to be great employee for Resene, learn some new things and work towards a successful career. Wherever I go from here can only be something that I enjoy, whether it be working for Resene, getting into videogames and data analysis, or taking off as an author. I’ll be putting all my effort into studying for my degree and learning the ropes for Resene.

What does success mean to you?

Success is being able to spend your time doing something that you can enjoy and that supports your life. I already feel rather successful just for getting to this point.

Are you thinking of getting involved in our other programmes?

I would like to just keep volunteering in the shop for now, so that I can keep spending time interacting with the lovely ladies that come into the shop every day.

What advice would you give other people looking to change?

Work to your strengths and keep at it, things will look up eventually. My book took four years to get to this point, I’ve been applying to jobs for the last nine months, and it took me eight months to get my final drama credit so that I could get into University. Patience and dedication will pay off.
